While the Map Guide was in production, two artists participating in the Biennial needed additional printed works to be included alongside their exhibitions at the CAC New Orleans. Mokgosi’s publication contained an academic text about the representation of the Bush people in the film, The Gods Must Be Crazy.

A clear and monochromatic approach was implemented for the exhibition takeaway to serve as a ‘further reading’ of sorts, breaking up the text with stills of the film and the exhibited work. I felt the design did not require additional embellishment nor a more challenging text layout for the academic essay, in hopes to keep all information as straight-forward as possible. The dimension of the booklet best lent itself to a single column layout.

Printed in New Orleans

While the Map Guide was in production, two artists participating in the Biennial needed additional printed works to be included alongside their exhibitions at the CAC New Orleans. Syjuco’s exhibition poster contained a brief history of St. Malo alongside an interview that served as a compliment to the entire piece she installed throughout various parts of the city.

The oversize poster dimension allowed for a wonderful amount of breathing room to play with in the layout of the overview, interview, exhibition location, archival images, footnotes, and colophon. A hierarchy of typeface sizes, weights and styles flowed throughout the page. I felt it necessary to keep the same typeface and text styling between both artists’ work, to ensure a universal approach to the conveyance of information as well as to make them seem as if they were a design unit under the exhibition umbrella. Uniformity in this case led the design choices and worked best in the time constraints within the production phase.
